AMA 2004 Specialty Reach for the Stars

held at the Wyndham Orlando Resort September 23 –24

I attended my first Specialty Show in Orlando, Florida with my husband Randy and it was four days that I will treasure in my memory for a long time.

The White Excitement Party was held on Tuesday night and we enjoyed watching Joyce Watkins dance her little feet off along with meeting other breeders and making so many new friends. The Seminars followed on Wednesday with speaker Vicki Abbott giving us all such interesting and informative information in the programs she presented.

The scheduled program for Thursday was Obedience – judged by Mrs. Diane Schultz followed by the Puppy Dog and Puppy Bitch Sweepstakes, Best Puppy in Sweepstakes, Junior Dog and Junior Bitch Sweepstakes, Best Junior in Sweepstakes and Best in Sweepstakes – judged by Mrs. Glynnette Cass.

Friday’s Conformation Classes were judged by Mrs. Barbara Dempsey Alderman and opened with the Junior Showmanship followed with Puppy Dog, Dog 12-18, Dog- Bred by Exhibitor, Dog- Open, Winners Dog and Reserve Winners Dog.

After the lunch break there was a Parade of Rescue Dogs that brought many tears to all that watched and listened to their stories.

Next was the Puppy Bitch, Bitch 12-18, Bitch-Bred by Exhibitor, Bitch-American Bred, Bitch-Open, Winners Bitch and Reserve Winners Bitch. Following a short break was Veteran Dog, Best of Breed, Best of Winners, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Award of Merit, Stud Dog and Brood Bitch.

As I watched all these beautiful Maltese for two days I was never so mesmerized than when Thriller (Ch. Marcris Thrill Of Victory) entered the room. When Thriller bred by Joyce Watkins - owned by Tonia Holibaugh and Barbara Davis entered the ring I couldn’t say anything but oh my god. Tonia’s expert handling, training and grooming is so evident when you watch this dynamic twosome make their way around the ring. As all the Maltese and their owners/handlers waited for the judges decision Thriller’s eyes were fixed on the judge – I remember glancing over at Joyce Watkins and the expression on her face is one that will be etched in my mind forever – she is not only proud of Thriller but equally proud of Tonia for her hard work, her dedication to the breed and what this winning duo means to all of us who are infatuated with the Maltese Breed and their accomplishments.

The Maltese world lost Thriller on August 2nd, 2006. There will never be another dog so confident in the ring and so loving in the hearts of many of us. Once in a life time there is a special dog, owned by a special handler and bred by a special breeder. This beautiful Maltese was named Thriller !!!!
